Policy brief

Africa

The South African Department of Science and Technology developed The White Paper on Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI) to outline the government's long-term policy direction to enhance the role of STI in fostering a prosperous and inclusive society (PDF, 3.55MB). This policy document aims to leverage STI for inclusive economic growth, increased competitiveness, and improved quality of life for citizens.

The document addresses the need for South Africa to adapt to global trends, such as technological advancements and demographic shifts, while also tackling associated threats. Key themes covered in this policy document include inclusivity, transformation, and partnerships, with proposals focusing on policy coherence, human capability development, knowledge expansion, innovation performance, and increased investment.

The White Paper emphasises building on existing successes and fostering a National System of Innovation (NSI) that encourages creativity, learning, and entrepreneurship. Its implementation will occur through a series of decadal plans developed in collaboration with industry, academia, civil society, and government stakeholders.
