The article discusses the Smart Cities Index 2024, which ranks cities globally based on their implementation of smart solutions that enhance quality of life and address societal challenges. With a focus on sustainability in the face of environmental changes, the index, compiled by the International Institute for Management Development (IMD), surveys residents from 142 cities on aspects like:

  • health
  • safety
  • mobility
  • activities
  • opportunities, and
  • governance.

Notably, the top 20 cities are predominantly in Europe and Asia, with none from North America or Africa. The BBC interviews residents from five top-ranked cities to understand which smart city features significantly impact their lives.
