Tshwane’s illegal suburb leaves residents stuck without services
This article highlights the situation in Leeuwfontein, a settlement near Mamelodi, east of Pretoria. Although it may initially appear to be an affluent suburb with large houses and high boundary walls, it is, in fact, an informal settlement lacking basic services such as electricity, tap water, and a sewer system. The residents of Leeuwfontein purchased plots from a businessman in the area, but they have not received title deeds for their properties. Many of the residents are professionals working in government and the private sector. They express their disappointment in the unfulfilled promises of development and basic services in the area. Despite their attempts to request services from the City of Tshwane, they have been informed that the lack of services is due to their occupation of private land.
