The articles in this issue of Transformation - Volume 112, 2023 focus on the critical role of public housing in addressing the global housing crisis, particularly in highly unequal societies. They explore a range of public housing strategies, from direct state provision to subsidized and managed housing, with a specific emphasis on South Africa within the broader African and global context. The issue examines the historical and contemporary challenges and outcomes of state-funded housing, the moral and economic implications of public housing production, and the inadequacies of relying solely on private markets for housing provision. Initiated by the late Bill Freund, the articles stem from a collaborative project aiming to advance urban studies and public housing scholarship, highlighting the necessity of public housing to mitigate housing inequalities.
