The role of community engagement in urban innovation towards the co-creation of smart sustainable cities
The journal article discusses the increasingly prominent topic of community engagement within the context of smart cities, focusing on its significance in fostering innovation and social sustainability. Through a semi-systematic review of 71 sources from Web of Science and Scopus databases, the study advocates for community engagement as a pivotal factor in gathering knowledge and requirements necessary for urban innovation. By synthesising secondary data, the article proposes a model aimed at supporting community engagement for smart sustainable city development, outlining factors that influence this engagement.
The advanced model fosters cooperation among the subsequent participants, empowering them to collectively generate inventive services:

- Government entities,
- City planners,
- Scholars, and
- Businesses.
Additionally, the research emphasises the importance of both administrative and non-administrative stakeholders' involvement in co-creating urban services for smart sustainable cities. The study concludes by offering recommendations on how a community engagement perspective, involving diverse stakeholders, can contribute to resilient, technologically driven cities, supporting sustainable development and fostering socially inclusive urban spaces.
