Sustainable Urbanisation in Commonwealth Countries
This report titled Sustainable Urbanisation in Commonwealth Countries underscores the pressing challenges posed by rapid urbanisation and climate change within Commonwealth member states, exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic's global health and economic shocks, which have stalled progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). With nearly half of Commonwealth citizens residing in urban areas and a majority of SDG targets tied to urban development, the report emphasises the imperative of sustainable urbanisation as central to the Commonwealth's agenda. It highlights the need for well-led and well-planned cities, acknowledging the shortfall in capacity and resources in many urban settings. To address these challenges, the report advocates for a collaborative approach harnessing the diverse strengths of Commonwealth stakeholders, including intergovernmental, governmental, civil society, private sector, and academic entities, to bolster policymaking, financing, capacity-building, learning, and innovation towards achieving shared sustainable urbanisation objectives.
