Striking disparities in employment across South Africa
Evidence from a new spatial database

This paper examines the unequal distribution of economic opportunities across South Africa by using new spatial economic data. It highlights the concentration of employment in cities and compares their economic structures to those of towns and rural areas. While metros offer a more favourable and diverse economic environment, they have underperformed in the past decade, negatively affecting the national economy. The study emphasises the importance of this new dataset in fostering further research on spatial inequalities and labour market dynamics.
