Report

Africa

The report titled Risk-Informed Urban Development addresses rapid urbanisation in Africa, particularly within SADC's 16 Member States, where cities are experiencing exponential growth, leading to increased vulnerability to disaster risks. Despite low greenhouse gas emissions, the continent is highly susceptible to climate change and other risk drivers. The report emphasises the need for risk-informed development that integrates disaster risk reduction with sustainable development practices, addressing systemic risks and inequalities. It synthesises lessons learned across five key areas and offers recommendations for SADC to enhance resilience and urban planning:

  • Legal frameworks
  • Actionable programmes
  • Funding
  • Risk assessment
  • Data management
