This report titled Releasing Municipal Land for Affordable Housing (PDF, 21.6 MB) is focused on understanding the complexities involved in releasing municipal property for social and affordable housing in prime locations. It specifically examines the processes and challenges faced by four major metropolitan municipalities in South Africa: Cape Town, eThekwini (Durban), Johannesburg, and Tshwane (Pretoria). Through detailed case studies of these cities, the report documents their experiences in disposing of land for the purpose of creating affordable housing. The ultimate goal of the research is to enhance knowledge and strategies related to effectively managing and utilising municipal properties to address housing needs in well-located areas.
