This book is a compilation of insights and discussions from the Reconstructing the Future for People and Planet conference held in June 2022 at the Vatican. Spearheaded by Hans Joachim Schellnhuber, the conference aimed to tackle the challenge of eliminating greenhouse gas emissions in the building sector by 2050 and restoring the global climate by 2200. It brought together 54 distinguished participants, including scientists, architects, and activists, to discuss sustainable construction and urban planning. The book captures the critical debates and diverse perspectives on creating a sustainable future, emphasising the need to rethink economic models, integrate interdisciplinary approaches, and recognise the contributions of communities, particularly in the Global South. It underscores the importance of re-entangling urban functions and fostering collaboration to achieve meaningful and inclusive environmental progress.
