This article titled Putting design first highlights the transformation of social housing from the poor-quality, high-rise blocks of the last century to modern designs that emphasise quality construction, sustainability, and improved quality of life. It notes that despite Australia's limited commitment and funding for social housing, the demand is projected to reach 1.1 million people by 2037. Professor Philip Oldfield from the University of NSW argues that to match the standards of cosmopolitan cities like Paris or Barcelona, Australia needs to invest in building high-quality social housing, emphasising that Australian architects are capable of creating world-class housing when given the opportunity.
