Report

Africa

This report addresses the issue of multiple deprivation and spatial inequalities at the local municipality level across South Africa, as part of a research project funded by the Northern Ireland Department for the Economy through the International Science Partnership Fund. South Africa, known for its significant societal inequalities, continues to experience disparities across different geographical areas. The report emphasises the importance of understanding spatial deprivation in formulating effective policies to address these inequalities.

It utilises a composite measure of multiple deprivations, incorporating factors such as employment, education, material deprivation, and living environment, to update the South African Index of Multiple Deprivation (SAIMD) for the year 2022. By comparing the 2022 results with those from 2011, the report aims to evaluate the progress or deterioration of municipalities over time, highlighting the persistent challenges, especially in former homelands. Additionally, the report provides supplemental outputs, including Excel workbooks with detailed tables and graphs, and an interactive dashboard to aid analysts and policymakers in understanding and utilising the SAIMD data.
