Integrated SDG Insights Report South Africa
This report focuses on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the context of South Africa's economic situation. It highlights that while economic growth can initially support the SDGs, the SDG agenda itself can later become a catalyst for inclusive and low-carbon growth pathways. South Africa is identified as one of 65 economies globally in mitigation mode in 2023 and projected to remain so in 2024 and 2025. The country faces challenges such as high unemployment, elevated poverty rates, and high income inequality, limiting policy options for achieving the SDGs and increasing pressure to mitigate economic downturns' impact on vulnerable households, informal workers, youth, and micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs).
The report underscores that South Africa's slow economic growth cycle is dependent on carbon emissions, with a modest annual rate of change in carbon emissions intensity. This slow economic growth is not expected to significantly reduce poverty in the short term, highlighting persistent distributional challenges. Looking ahead, the report emphasises the increasing urgency to address climate change, reduce inequalities, poverty, and unemployment. It suggests that South Africa should innovate, adapt, and scale up efforts in alignment with the SDGs and national priorities to accelerate progress towards a more equitable, inclusive, and sustainable future.
