Report

United States of America, South Korea, South Africa, Saudi Arabia, Japan, Italy, India, Germany, France, China, Canada

This report delves into the complex landscape of infrastructure financing in Africa, emphasising the critical role of water, energy, and telecommunications systems in driving sustainable development. It underscores the need to move beyond traditional notions of bankability to ensure investments are not only financially viable but also socially, environmentally, and economically sustainable. The paper highlights key challenges, including the mismatch between investor expectations and project risk profiles, as well as the lack of comprehensive and interoperable data on infrastructure financing trends. It proposes a forward-thinking research agenda aimed at addressing these gaps and fostering collaboration among stakeholders. Additionally, the report identifies policy responses to enhance sustainable infrastructure financing, including fostering collaboration among Africa-based research institutions, financial actors, and local governments, and developing tools to support urban sustainable infrastructure financing through innovative risk-sharing mechanisms. Overall, the report provides a framework for understanding the complexities of infrastructure financing in Africa and offers insights to guide future research and policy actions in this critical area.
