The Future Cities Advisory Outlook 2023: Digital Innovations Empower Urban Net-Zero Carbon Transition report by the UN-Habitat China Future Cities Council (CFCC) examines the critical role of digital innovations in helping cities achieve net-zero carbon emissions amidst the growing challenge of climate change. It highlights that over half of the global population currently lives in cities, a figure expected to rise to 68% by 2050, with cities generating 70% of the world's energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions despite contributing 80% of global GDP. The report underscores that sustainable development will be determined in urban areas and emphasises the potential of technologies like big data, artificial intelligence, and digital twins in monitoring, calculating, providing feedback, and evaluating data to meet dual carbon goals.
