This media article describes how residents on the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast have started a campaign to withhold rates in retaliation for poor service delivery. The Rates Withholding Movement, which was started by Geoff Smailes in May 2020, now has attracted more than 100 supporters. According to Geoff Smailes, the movement was started after seven years of negotiations with the leadership and management of Umdoni Municipality. This movement is also working closely with the Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse (OUTA) to ensure that the movement has an impact.
