This research investigates the context of indoor environmental quality (IEQ) within green certified office buildings (PDF, 1.36 MB), focusing on how self-assessed productivity levels are influenced by the indoor environment. Qualitative data were collected through semi-structured interviews conducted with employees from two financial services companies (FSCs) based in green certified office buildings in South Africa. Thematic analysis was used to extract common themes, and findings were compared with previous research to identify new pathways or support existing ones.
The study found that physical components such as temperature, lighting, ventilation, and noise significantly affect individual productivity, engagement, organisational commitment, and psychological well-being. Additionally, safety, underpinned by location and amenities, emerged as a new factor contributing to individual productivity.
This research provides valuable insights into the factors influencing productivity within green certified office buildings, addressing a gap in the existing literature by highlighting the complex relationship between IEQ and individual productivity in such environments.
