The article summarises key findings from the GCRO’s 2023/24 Quality of Life Survey, focusing on how environmental issues and disasters affect Gauteng residents (PDF, 3.47MB). It reveals growing concern about water security, with 64% of people worried the province may run out of water. Over half of households experienced serious impacts from environmental events such as heatwaves, floods, pipe bursts, air pollution, and lightning. Informal settlements were particularly vulnerable, especially to flooding and pollution. Most affected residents did not have insurance, and some lacked strong support networks. The findings highlight the urgent need for better infrastructure, disaster response, and community support systems.
