Report

Africa

This report focuses on the humanitarian situation in Cameroon, particularly regarding internally displaced persons (IDPs) and refugees, whose numbers have surged due to conflicts fuelled by religious and political tensions, such as the Anglophone crisis, Boko Haram insurgency, and instability in the Central African Republic (CAR). Specifically, it highlights the challenges faced by the Douala 4 subdivision in accommodating the growing displaced population influx, leading to uncontrolled urban expansion without adequate planning. In response, UN-Habitat, supported by SECO, aims to enhance access to essential services and socio-economic opportunities for displaced populations in Douala through the "Urban Planning & Infrastructure in Migration Contexts Programme." The report outlines the development of a Spatial Profile for Douala city to understand the existing spatial dynamics better, identify challenges and gaps in public infrastructure services through a participatory approach, and initiate plans for addressing them, with the neighbourhood of Mambanda being selected as a pilot area for further detailed planning and implementation.
