City of Johannesburg Department of Housing

Africa

The City of Johannesburg is pleased to present the third issue of the City of Johannesburg Human Settlements Research Publication (PDF, 9.53 MB). This issue's thematic area is backyard housing. In Gauteng, backyard dwellings have grown faster than informal settlements since 2001, affecting municipal growth. Recognised as a rental submarket, backyard housing is included in the Consolidated Norms and Standards for Rental Housing.

The first section features a SALGA position paper on municipal support for backyard housing, suggesting policy changes. The second section includes postgraduate research from our student support programme, focusing on policy reactions to backyard accommodation in Dube Township, recommending an area-based municipal policy approach.
