This report addresses the urgent need to shift towards sustainable construction practises, particularly in the rapidly urbanising Global South, where much of the future urban development will occur. With the built environment already responsible for a significant portion of CO2 emissions, the report emphasises the importance of adopting alternative, circular, and low-carbon construction methods to achieve climate goals like limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius. It explores the concept of a just transition towards sustainable construction, integrating narratives of climate adaptation, mitigation, and resilience efforts. By focusing on the needs of the urban poor, including improved living conditions and local value chain development, the report advocates for inclusive regulations and policies that support sustainable construction practises. It also highlights the importance of considering overarching themes such as secure land tenure and community leadership in fostering holistic approaches to sustainable construction. Through cross-fertilisation of ideas, the report aims to strengthen the narrative and implementation of a just transition in sustainable construction practises, recognising the imperative of including marginalised communities in the value chain to avoid significant future environmental costs.
