This article highlights a 10-year housing project in Site C, Khayelitsha, where 72 shacks were replaced with double-storey homes offering essential services like water, electricity, and toilets. Led by Urban Think Tank Empower (UTTE) and Ikhayalami, with funding from the VRM Foundation, residents contributed 3%-5% of the costs. The project provides an alternative to Reconstruction and Development Programme (RDP) housing and demonstrates how innovative, community-centered designs can address the challenges of informal settlements. It serves as a model for future initiatives in other communities.
