With the support of several civil society partners, Isandla Institute produced a joint civil society submission to tackle significant challenges in the backyard housing market. The submission focuses on four key areas of intervention: providing access to basic services for backyard residents on both public and private land, improving tenure security for both landlords and backyard residents, recognising the right to self-build as part of the right of access to housing, and promoting safe neighborhoods through an area-based violence prevention approach.
