Alternative Building Technologies for Low Income Housing in Cape Town, South Africa
Innovations in building materials are revolutionising home building, enabling faster, cheaper, and more environmentally friendly construction of homes. The aim of this project was to assist the City of Cape Town Department of Human Settlements in implementing alternative building technologies in Breaking New Ground (BNG) housing projects. The study involved interviews with BNG housing residents, Department of Human Settlements officials, and industry professionals. Additionally, comprehensive research on available alternative building technologies in South Africa was conducted. Through these efforts, areas for potential improvement in BNG housing were identified, alongside the ways alternative materials can help the Department of Human Settlements better serve the needs of Cape Town's low-income population. Furthermore, guidance was provided on the successful implementation of these technologies by the Department of Human Settlements.
