This journal article lays out a new narrative on sustainable urban development. The authors suggest that this narrative become central to global policy making to help humanity respond to the most pressing social and environmental challenges. They recognise that the planet is rapidly urbanizing.

They emphasise the need to address emergent challenges such as:

  • the necessity to foster resilient and equitable social systems rather than focusing only on economic development,
  • better integrating the climate change, health and well-being, and biodiversity agendas, and
  • ensuring disaster-resilient infrastructure.
