A new data tool aims to revolutionise the public’s access to social housing information
The article discusses the challenges and potential solutions for achieving truly inclusive and integrated neighbourhoods in South Africa. Despite efforts to undo spatial apartheid, urban segregation persists due to historical planning and a flawed housing market. High property prices and gentrification further displace low-income earners, limiting meaningful interactions and social cohesion. The social housing programme, offering subsidised rental accommodations, is highlighted as a transformative solution, promoting socioeconomic integration by enabling poor and working-class families to live in well-located, mixed-income areas. To enhance public understanding and foster informed debate, a new Social Housing Portal has been launched, providing accessible, up-to-date information on social housing projects, trends, and progress, aiming to improve policy and practise in the sector.
