Report

Africa

The report "A Country in Crisis: First steps towards a growth strategy" highlights the critical importance of addressing key challenges faced by South Africa to initiate a path towards economic growth. Emphasising the notion that progress can only begin once the nation has arrested its downward trajectory, the report underlines the urgent need for a comprehensive strategy to reverse the current decline. Key areas of focus include enhancing security and reinforcing the rule of law, tackling the pressing issues in the energy and logistics sectors, and stabilising the country's public finances. Additionally, the report stresses the necessity of kerbing the influence of corrupt entities, particularly in the construction industry, and fortifying the state against exploitation by self-serving elites.

To facilitate a sustainable transformation, the Centre for Development and Enterprise suggests that the government must confront the significant shortcomings within major institutions like Transnet and Eskom, while simultaneously laying the groundwork for market-oriented solutions to replace monopolistic structures. Furthermore, the report advocates for stringent fiscal measures, including spending cuts and a reassessment of commitments to increased expenditure, in order to address the fiscal deficit. A fundamental aspect of the reform strategy is the replacement of ineffective leaders and officials with competent and capable individuals who prioritise the nation's interests over political affiliations. Ultimately, the report underscores the necessity of a robust leadership, led by a President supported by a dedicated, credible, and cohesive team, capable of implementing and embedding transformative changes in South Africa's intricate systems.
